Hervey Bay to Manly | School Holiday Voyage
Finish the school holidays with something truly memorable.
Step aboard South Passage, Queensland’s iconic tall ship, and set sail from Hervey Bay to Manly on a hands-on ocean adventure along the spectacular Queensland coastline. Taking place during the second and final week of the school holidays, this voyage is perfectly timed to challenge, inspire and build confidence before term 4 and exams begin.
This Adventure Under Sail, is designed for young people ready to step outside their comfort zone, learn new skills and experience life at sea. Suitable for beginners and first-time sailors, no sailing experience required. All training and supervision are provided by our experienced crew and Watch Leaders.
A Voyage with Purpose
This voyage is specifically designed for young people during the school holidays and provides a genuine sail training experience. It can be used for:
Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Practice and/or Qualifying Adventurous Journey)
Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – Residential Project
Participants develop teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and resilience in a supportive and structured environment — skills that carry well beyond the end of the voyage and into the school term ahead.
⚓ Life on Board South Passage
Once onboard, participants become part of the ship’s working crew.
South Passage is a two-masted, gaff-rigged schooner, launched in 1993 and inspired by 19th-century pilot schooners. While modern in construction, she is sailed the traditional way — everything is done by hand.
Under the guidance of experienced Watch Leaders, trainees are organised into three watches — Red, White and Blue — and take turns running the ship day and night.
Life on board includes:
Learning to raise sails, haul sheets, tack and gybe
Taking a turn at the helm
Standing lookout and maintaining the ship’s log and charts
Working in watches of 2–4 hours
Living, eating and working together as a team
There are moments of challenge, teamwork and achievement — and when conditions require, it’s all hands on deck, creating powerful shared experiences and a strong sense of accomplishment.
